Field guide · Closeout and corrections

Punch list or task list?

Both can describe work that is still open. The distinction helps a builder decide what must be corrected and accepted at a milestone, and what simply needs a next action during the job.

Use the list that matches the decision.

Comparison of construction punch lists and everyday task lists
Purpose and timingPunch listCorrect or finish work identified at a walkthrough or milestone. A rolling list may start well before final turnover.Everyday task listMove a decision, handoff, preparation step or field issue forward throughout the job.
ExamplePunch listCorrect a chipped cabinet face noted on a pre-handover walk.Everyday task listConfirm the approved exterior light fixture before installation.
Next ownerPunch listThe trade or person responsible for the correction.Everyday task listThe person who can make the decision or complete the next action.
What closes itPunch listThe correction is reported complete and checked under the project's closeout process.Everyday task listThe next action is resolved, with any needed review recorded.
Who accepts itPunch listThe reviewer designated by the project or contract.Everyday task listThe requester or appropriate lead when the item calls for a check.

The names and acceptance process vary by company and contract. Keep formal closeout and required signoffs separate from a team's working list. A photo or a status marked “done” does not itself mean the designated reviewer has accepted the work.

Illustrative example

One job, two kinds of work.

This fictional example describes a field practice, not a STRUXIS customer or product result.

Daily task: Before the electrician installs exterior lights, confirm the approved fixture selection and tell the installer where to find that decision.

Punch item: At the pre-handover walkthrough, record a chipped cabinet face, the room and cabinet, the correction requested and who will review the repair.

The first is a decision needed before work proceeds; the second is a correction to existing work. An open task can later appear on a punch list if it remains unresolved at the milestone.

When the lists overlap.

Do not let a second list create a second, conflicting version of the same issue. If an early task becomes a punch item, retain the original observation, decisions and evidence, then identify the closeout reviewer and correction still required. Keep the item open until the relevant process accepts it.

The jobsite task-tracking guide explains the shared record each item needs. The superintendent follow-up guide shows how to review open work each day. Neither a working list nor a team review recorded in software replaces a contractual closeout decision, required inspection, engineering review or code-compliance signoff.
